Coherent Breathing

 

Breathing is an important aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 5000 years ago, Huang Ti said: "Health results when breathing and blood flow are in harmony - disease results from their disharmony." The harmony that Huang Ti is referring to results from slow, deep, "coherent" respiration, which Huang Ti says results in "a healthy balanced person". Huang Ti goes on to say that "a healthy balanced person is not affected by disease."  The below figure demonstrates the synchrony of breathing and blood flow as observed in the ear lobe for 5 cycles of Coherent Breathing.

Coherent Breathing involves finding and breathing at an optimal rhythm and depth. At this rhythm and depth, blood flow synchronizes with respiration, the body naturally relaxes, blood vessels open, and blood flow naturally increases. However, because the muscles of respiration are doing the work, the heart and vascular system can relax, and when they do, the entire nervous system relaxes.
